Through Reading:
Choosing books based on the science concepts your students are currently learning allows you to stretch your 'science time' into other 'subject times'. This book talks about the aspects of the water cycle using new vocabulary words you can teach your students. I actually used this book to create a vocabulary lesson for another class. This vocabulary lesson perfectly incorporates the science concepts students are currently learning. Using books is an fun and engaging way to incorporate science education into other aspects during the school day. |

Through Writing:
Another way to incorporate science learning throughout the school days is through writing. Children are very creative, so by giving them a fun prompt to write about that incorporates what they have learned in science keeps them engaged. This is also a great way for teachers to assess what their students understand or don't understand. In class, we were told to write about the journey our rain drop has gone through (from the previous activity) as if we were the rain drop. While I was writing my journey through the rain drop's eyes, I realized how not creative I am! Once we finished writing ours we read through some 4th grade students stories. They were incredible and so creative! However, while I was reading them I could easily see where students were having misconceptions and misunderstandings of the process of the water cycle. I realized how great of a tool this would be for teachers to assess their students understanding. |
