Science AutobiographyOne of our first assignments in our science education class was the Science Autobiography. We were instructed to write about our past experiences and views of science. I wrote about barely remembering anything from science classes growing up. I use to think science was memorizing facts and completing/writing out experiments using the scientific method. Science to me had no meaning behind it and I didn't understand why we needed to know these things or what the big idea was. This science education class allowed me to take a step back and understand why science is important and how to make it meaningful. Joanne K. Olson's in her article, "Concept-Focused Teaching", talked about the importance of creating a 'big idea' or the 'take-home message' for students. As a teacher, I can give my students amazing lessons and investigations that are hands on and engaging, but unless there is a take home message for those students, it is meaningless for them in the longterm. Years from now I want my future students to be able to write a science autobiography about their science experiences and have much more to say then I did.
